Trends: Old Money clothing style
A trend that we have often seen lately is the “Old money" style. This style is similar to what many also recognize as the "preppy" style. In this blog we explain the style and give advice on how to you can incorporate this style into your outfit.
What is the “Old money” style?
The Old Money style is a clothing style inspired by the inherited wealth of the most famous families and Royals of the past. A term that is often used with the “old money” style is “quiet luxury”, which literally translates to “silent wealth”. Status is therefore conveyed in a more subtle way and more attention is paid to the visible high quality than a brand name stated on the garment.
So it is not about wearing popular designer brands from the 21st century, but brands that traditionally stand for reliability and the use of high-quality material and fabric. The brand logo certainly does not have to be clearly visible on these garments. The outfit should above all challenge elegance and style without showing off logos. Attention should be drawn to the high-quality materials and beautiful prints. For luxury materials, think of cashmere, tweed or cable-knitted garments. In clothing, checked patterns are a good example of prints, while in shoe fashion the so-called brogues print is very typical.
Footwear in the “Old money” style
As is often said, shoes complete the outfit. We are happy to give you some tips and point out specific ones that you can use to recreate the Old Money look in your outfit.
The old money aesthetic is often divided into 3 categories, these are:
formal,
casual,
holiday/beach.
1. Formal
When we think of the formal "Old money" style, for men we think of 3-piece wool or linen suits combined with leather Oxford or Derby lace-up shoes, buckle shoes or penny loafers. Brands that men can look at for this are Magnanni, Van Bommel, Greve, Parbleu and Harris.
For the ladies we are thinking of an elegant evening dress combined with a pair of pumps, slingbacks or classic loafers. Brands where ladies can look in our collection are Brunate, Pertini, Lilian, Nalini, Evaluna, Peter Kaiser, Pascucci and Zinda.
2. Casual
The big difference between formal and casual "old money" style is mainly in the use of colors and materials. While the formal variant of the old money style, in terms of shoe fashion, is mainly characterized by dark colors such as black and brown, especially in smooth leather, the casual counterpart uses more soft colors and light and breathable materials. In addition to looks, comfort is also very important.
Men can look at the same aforementioned brands in our collection, but for a casual look it is better to look for suede loafers or moccasins with possibly a slightly sportier light-colored sole.
The ladies can follow the same advice and view the collections of brands such as Babouche, DL Sport, Roberto d'Angelo, Pedro Miralles and Sioux.
Another option for men is a 'neat' sneaker. A decent sneaker is a good middle ground between formal and sporty and therefore fits perfectly into the casual/casual chic genre.
3. Holiday/beach
Finally, the holiday “old Money" style. This actually goes a step further than the casual variant. The focus is on strolling in style on holiday along the boulevard along the beach and on the terrace. The gentlemen can do this, for example look for a pair of espadrilles from the TOMS brand.
The ladies can look for a pair of airy open shoes from the brands Hispanitas, Valentina or espadrilles from Kanna, TOMS and Unisa, among others.
