What is the point of a shoehorn?

What is the point of a shoehorn?

The shoehorn seems to have originated in the late Middle Ages or Renaissance, used by the noblewomen who wore very decorated tight shoes. It was difficult for the ladies to come into their shoes and that is how most likely the shoehorn “chausse pied” originated, but no one knows the details. That the invention arises from a practical problem, however, is quite certain.

Although a new sturdy shoe can be very comfortable and pleasant while walking, the stiff leather often presents a problem when putting it on. The leather does not yield enough and the foot enters the shoe with great difficulty. Especially the reinforced back part of your shoe, called the “counter”, suffers a lot from this. The leather is more likely to scrape or sit double. Then getting into the shoe becomes even more difficult and the shoe will certainly not look better.

The shoehorn is therefore not only made for the elderly or for people with a physical disability, which is often thought. The shoehorn is primarily an aid to slide into the shoe more easily and to ensure that your shoes remain in good condition for longer. Shoehorns used to come in all shapes and sizes, luxuriously finished with decorations and other treatments. However, nowadays it is a practical aid without too much fuss.

The operation is very simple, but effective. You place the shoehorn in the shoe so that the foot has a kind of slide to sink into the shoes. This protects the back of the shoe. The shoehorn is therefore a useful aid, especially for new shoes.

Today shoehorns are used more in shoe stores such as MONFRANCE than at home. Hopefully, after reading this MONFRANCE blog, you will also use a shoehorn at home more often to preserve your beautiful (new) shoes.
